I watched the film Bloody Sunday (2002) yesterday evening, and found it to be an understandably shocking dramatisation of the events in Derry in Northern Ireland in 1972 when British troops fired on civil rights protestors.  My understanding of the ‘troubles’ in Northern Ireland is somewhat sketchy, but being more familiar with the nationalist movement in India, I found myself making comparisons between the two.  I found it very fitting, therefore, when, in the final scene of the film, it was said ‘this is our Amritsar‘, referring to the tactics used by the British in India in comparable circumstances in 1919.  An apt but unfortunate example of why it is so important to learn from history.  ‘Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it’ – Santayana.
